From 2:45 to 3:15, students in Mr. Fitz-Roy’s Discover class are turning the science room update down, making their own Rube Goldberg machines from scratch. What is a Rube Goldberg machine, you may ask? It is a device or apparatus that is deliberately over-engineered to perform a very simple task in a very COMPLEX fashion, usually involving a chain reaction of some sort. It is an engineering challenge that involves figuring out how to utilize potential and kinetic energy and involves creativity, ingenuity, and patience. The students have practiced with marble machines and iPad software, and now it is time to take off the training wheels! They were provided with a random assortment of materials, including wood, foam, marbles, nails, a toy car, balloons, and a glue gun. Now it is time for them to bring their creativity to the table!
